On the occasion of the international day to end impunity at the UN.

Two more journalists have been killed by security forces in Egypt, bringing the total number of those murdered for simply conveying the truth to 15, since the January 25th revolution.

On the international day to stop impunity at the UN, the Arab media monitor would like to emphasize that all those involved directly and intentionally in the killing of journalists in Egypt since the January 25th revolution have escaped justice, since none have been tried, let along convicted, for their crimes.

The Arab media monitor would like to also draw attention to the fact that throughout the last year, two more journalists were brutally killed, including Alaa Ahmed Seleem from Sinai, whose body was found in the Sheikh Zoueid area on the 11th of August, with traces of torture on on his body. The second of which, was Sherif El Fekky, from the Shaabmasr Journal (People of Egypt), who was killed during his coverage of a football match at the air forces stadium on the 8th of February.

With their deaths, the number of journalists killed since the revolution has now risen to a staggering 15, showing the dangers of being a journalist in today’s Egypt. Three were killed before the military coup that took place on the 3rd of July, while the remaining 12 were killed after the coup. Those responsible for these ruthless crimes have yet to be presented in front of a court of law, while only very few of these cases are being investigated by Egyptian authorities.

The Arab monitor hereby condemns the total negligence shown by the legal authorities in Egypt. Turning a blind eye to these offences will only encourage more blood shed against journalists, for simply doing their job. As a result, the lack of punishment given to offenders, as well as the fear tactics used by the Egyptian authorities against journalists, for their own political interests, will only deprive the Egyptian people of neutral and unbiased journalism in Egypt.
