(Ikshef) – A Cairo military court on Wednesday has sentenced cameraman Islam Jumaa of the closed Misr 25 channel to 25 years in prison, and 3 years imprisonment for Mohammed Abossoul, a journalist of Akhbar Al-Youm, and the same for Ayman Gaballah, of managing editor of Al-Jazeera Mubasher in the case dubbed “Al-Shater Sons”. The court sentenced other defendants to life imprisonment, and other like Khairat Al-Shater, deputy leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, was sentenced to 15 years in prison, and with sentences of up to 5 for others. This is on charges of planting spy devices and trying to penetrate the websites of ministries and sensitive bodies
Lawyer and human rights activist Ezzat Ghneim said the sentence was appealable within 60 days of the defendants being informed, according to the law
The defendants are tried in the so called “Sons of Al-Shater” case on charges of “planting listening devices before the June 2012 presidential elections and monitoring state bodies.”
The defendants and their lawyers deny the charges, asserting that “most of them were arrested sporadically and at different times, including those who were subjected to enforced disappearance.”
The first trial session was held on December 8, 2015.
