The Arab media freedom monitor (AMFM) is deeply concerned by verdicts issued today by Cairo Criminal Court chaired by Judge Nagi Shehata, on the case known in Media as “Raba’a Control Room and Media Center”.

The verdicts varied between execution and life sentence for all defendants, in a farce added to the series of similar verdicts issued by the same court that took Egyptian judiciary to the bottom.

Such verdicts require firm stance by all advocates of freedom, law and justice both inside and outside Egypt in order to save justice and save innocent lives facing life-ending verdicts.

Today’s verdicts for 15 journalists included execution to journalist Walid Shalaby.
It is the first capital punishment for a person used his pen to criticize a political regime!!

The verdict included life sentence to another 14 journalists and media men in this case.
It is the largest number of journalists in one case to be prone to such harsh verdicts.
The list of journalists sentenced to life imprisonment is as follows:
1- Hani Salahuddin
2- Ahmed Subei
3- Hassan el-Kabbany
4- Ibrahim el-Taher
5-Magdi Abdellatif
6- Youssef Talaat
7- Samhi Mostafa
8- Mosad El-Barbary
9- Amr Farrag
10- Mohamed El-Adli
11- Abdallah El-Fakharany
12- Khaled Hamza
13- Gamal Nassar
14-Abdou Desouki

(AMFM) emphasizes that these verdicts are political and are not based on proper law. They were issued by political intervention with the aim of using them as a pressure on defendants and their families in the context of the political conflict in Egypt between 3rd of July military coup regime and the pro-legitimacy powers supporting elected civilian President Mohamed Morsi.
This is an immoral act using the life and freedom of civilians as a tool in political conflict.
(AMFM) calls upon all organizations in addition to local and international institutions on the freedom of expression to instantly move to stop the implementation of these verdicts and their usage as a tool of political pressure.
