The Arab Media Freedom monitor strongly condemns the detainment of
the journalist Ahmed Mansour by German security authorities at the Berlin airport based on an arrest warrant issued by the Egyptian authorities under the pretext of his conviction in criminal cases in Egypt, even though everyone knows the deteriorating situation reached by the Egyptian judiciary after the coup on July 3, 2013, which has been made the one hand to carry out political orders of the imprisonment or execution of opponents such as journalists, politicians and civil society activists.
The Arab monitor expresses their regret for this behavior of the German authorities, who knows the meaning of democracy and the rule of law, therefore must know that the ruling power in Egypt is currently doing nothing under the law, democracy and human right. This is as a result of a military coup which has violently stepped on media freedom from the first day by closing opposition channels, newspapers and by imprisoning dozens of journalists among them, Ahmed Mansour himself, handing him false accusations because of his journalistic writings and news channel programs.
The Monitor believes that the arrest of Ahmed Mansour this way in Berlin Airport despite possessing a document proving his innocence from the Interpol itself sends a negative message from the German authorities, showing their support of the suppression of press freedom in Egypt, and encourages more repression in the hands of the authorities in Cairo. In addition, the move by the Germany installs unnecessary pressure on many of the journalists and media professionals who have been subjected to mock trials and sentenced in sham provisions in Egypt. The move sends a brutal message to those professionals, that they are in danger despite the fact that what was issued against them are simply elementary provisions under forged legal processes.
We appeal to the German authorities to speed up the release of Ahmed Mansour, and to offer a formal apology to him for this act, and also call on all organizations for freedom of opinion and expression in Germany and across the EU to move quickly to save the media, Ahmed Mansour, and put an end to prosecution of journalists
